the product
The current pandemic shows us that it is possible to reduce our negative impact on the environment if we consume more consciously and reduce the buying of cheap products. Let us continue the fight against pollution after COVID-19 and prepare for it now! The ban on single-use plastics in the entire EU from 2021 also speaks for the growth of sustainable alternatives. Whether for private use at home, in restaurants or hotels, or even as a sales product in your shop, the reusable straws made from natural sedge grass offer just such a future-proof alternative to conventional plastic straws.
Do you ask yourself why are these drinking straws so special? They are not only eco-friendly and biodegradable but they are produced by a small start-up company in Uganda. That means, by buying this product you will support a social enterprise as well as (create an added value for the whole Ugandan market) significantly contribute to the world´s development cooperation. ABout sina and ouroots
The Social Innovation Academy -SINA-, acts against the existing deficiencies in the Ugandan school system by offering opportunities for further education to the population regardless of age, qualification, religion, gender, and origin. A long-term goal of the organization is to create lasting benefits for the population and to improve the standard of living of the society. The promotion of creativity and autonomy is given high priority in the organization’s statutes. By providing support in setting up start-up companies and fighting unemployment, SINA helps people to help themselves and secures a livelihood for the entrepreneurs.
The work of SINA offers particular added value for all those involved: young people are given the chance to receive an education which they would otherwise not have had due to financial hardship and/or a lack of infrastructure. The opportunity to set up their own companies is given to them by providing the necessary know-how. This has added value for the entire region, since local companies often purchase local raw materials from local producers and many people thus benefit from the success of SINA. By founding these start-ups, the program participants are given the opportunity to achieve a higher standard of living beyond the poverty line.
Etienne Salborn, a graduate of the bachelor's program in Non-Profit, Social and Health Management and the master's program in Peace and Development, founded the Social Innovation Academy in 2014. Since 2018, he has been introducing the concept of SINA to students of his alma mater Management Center Innsbruck and now he is the connector between the students and Ouroots. The start-up of four young people from Uganda and England produces biodegradable and compostable drinking straws from sedges. The straws have already been successfully sold in Africa in cafés, restaurants, and bars.

Management Center Innsbruck
In close cooperation with committed supporters, sponsors and partners, Management Center Innsbruck is an important driving force in the positioning of Innsbruck, Tyrol and Austria as a centre for scientific debate and international encounters. For the first time, the MCI is establishing eleven different types of cooperation between non-profit enterprises or organizations and students in the non-profit, social or health care sector. The entrepreneurial college provides a structured presentation of the framework conditions of the entire project in order to provide students with real practical experience.
